This series of work I created in Vallauris have two intertwining threads: functional ware and abstraction. My functional ware take on exaggerated designs like a meandering handle or a punctured spout whereas my sculptural pieces reference stacked traditional Vallaurian pots. This series explores the spectrum between the two.

My forms reference Vallaurian pottery history from L’Age D’or de Vallauris by Anne Lajoix and visits to the Musée National Picasso. The specific color palette on my glazed surfaces is inspired by the pastel exterior and terracotta roofs of old town architecture and the glistening waters of the Cote D’Azur.

In addition, pushing further for experimental glazing techniques combined with sgraffito, I collaborated with Melanie Reim, my artist-in-residence colleague, on two plates during my time here.

Finally, I think of my pieces as characters that form a tableau vivant of material transmutation and an alien artist’s interpretation of the ceramic history here.
